The Old Town Project

The Old Town Project is a collaborative songwriting initiative created by California Irish in response to the growing presence of AI-generated music within the industry.

At its heart is a simple challenge: write an original song titled The Old Town.

Every participating artist uses the same title, but the similarities end there. Each song is shaped by personal memories, lived experience and individual perspective, creating a collection of entirely unique works connected by a single name.

The project was inspired by the appearance of an AI-generated song called Old Town and seeks to celebrate the things that make music uniquely human: emotion, storytelling, imperfection, creativity and connection.

California Irish will launch the project on Thursday 2nd July with the release of their own song, The Old Town, before nominating fellow artists to write and share their own interpretations. Those artists will then nominate others, creating a chain of original songs and stories that grows organically across genres and communities.

The long-term ambition is to create a living archive of songs, each carrying its own meaning and history, while raising important questions about creativity, authorship and the future of music.

Same title.

Different story.

Because every songwriter has an Old Town.

And every song comes from somewhere.

Let’s create something meaningful together.

Every songwriter has an Old Town. As artists from across Ireland and beyond share their songs, videos and stories, you’ll be able to watch them here.
